Richard III is undoubtedly Leicester’s most famous (not to mention notorious) celebrity. The much maligned ex-ruler of England not only stayed at Leicester Castle after his coronation at Westminster Abbey, but also rode out from Leicester to battle against Henry Tudor in the Battle of Bosworth. It was also in Leicester that he died, though his remains were not discovered until 2012, under a car park!
History fans will love the variety of Richard III related activities in and around Leicester, including the Richard III Visitor Centre and the Richard III walking tour, which takes in numerous sites that were significant in his life. Thanks to the recent discovery of his skeleton, visitors can now even view the facial reconstruction of the king at the Visitor Centre and capture a glimpse of how this famous monarch may have appeared in real life.
